Celebrate What Your Body Can Do

Fitness is meant to light you up. It doesn’t have to be a chore. It doesn’t have to induce anxiety or dread. Fitness is a celebration of what the body can do. Imagine if fitness could bring you JOY.

I’ve been stuck on a thought for a while. What does it mean to be FIT? Fit for what? I’ve done some workouts where I felt like I didn’t belong there; I was the wrong fit for those types of activities. Take running for example. I’m TERRIBLE at running. I have short legs and asthmatic lungs. I CAN run, but I’m not the right fit to be a high-level runner. And, you know, that’s okay. Because there are other realms of exercise and fitness in which I THRIVE. Running is great on occasion, but I can’t say that it brings me joy.

When you think about fitness, think about where you can thrive and what can bring you joy. There are many categories of fitness you can explore. This isn’t a comprehensive list by any measure, but I found it helpful to categorize fitness into the following groups:

  • STRENGTH

  • FLEXIBILITY AND MOBILITY

  • BODY COMPOSITION

  • SPEED

  • KINESTHETIC INTELLIGENCE

  • ENDURANCE

In my next post, I’ll start exploring some of the categories of fitness. But in the meantime, consider what brings you joy and where you can thrive. The human body is an intricately created and finely crafted piece of art and beauty. How will you celebrate what your body can do?

(Note: I found the following link helpful when I was originally considering the fitness categories, so I wanted to give them a shout-out: https://simplicable.com/en/physical-fitness).
